Conviction Consequences - Travel

TRAVEL

Entry to other countries

Persons with criminal records may be denied entry to or visas for foreign countries. Canada has typically denied persons from crossing the border because they have criminal records that appear in a computer search at entry. Individuals with criminal records seeking to gain entry into Canada are advised to apply for a waiver through an application for Criminal Rehabilitation from a Canadian Immigration Office. The application costs $200-$1,000 depending on the severity of the crime.

Passports

The US State Department will refuse to issue a passport to any person convicted of a felony (federal or state) drug offense if he used the passport or otherwise crossed an international boundary in committing the offense.

An issued passport may be revoked upon conviction of a disqualifying offense. The revocation lasts during any period that the person is imprisoned or on parole or supervised release as a result of the conviction.
